Our Story



Sunset Coastal Grill opened its doors on November 14, 2002. We, Dewey and Patti Blaylock, purchased the three acre bayfront tract from The St Joe Company. We built our restaurant from the ground up and tried to create a feeling of home when you walk in the door. The interior windows were once in Memaw Wilder's home. The story goes that workers going to the mill would stop at her home for biscuits each morning. We were not aware of this until after they were in place as you see them today but their presence encourages us to do an even better job of cooking for you.

Patti and Dewey are children of Air Force families and spent many years growing up on the Gulf Coast after their fathers retired. Enamored with Gulf County's coastline and St Joseph's Bay, we moved back to the gulf coast after success in business ventures elsewhere. Patti loves the close proximity to nature and the beautiful views. Dewey takes every opportunity to fish and explore the local area.

During the building phase we relocated many of the Palm Trees to create our natural parking lot. The Canary Island Date Palm in the southeast corner of the middle of the parking lot is the last remaining palm of those planted along Hwy 98 during the 1930's. Her bark is damaged but she has hung in here with us and makes many returning customers smile when they see her still thriving.

The City Pier can be seen from nearly every seat in the restaurant and looks spectacular during sunset. A deep water channel runs in front of the restaurant and is a popular place for fishermen. Redfish, trout, flounder, and mullet are common catches in the bay. Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, Wahoo and Tripletail can be caught near shore or while you enjoy a full day offshore charter. We are fortunate to be on a bay that allows recreational scalloping. Snorkeling for bay scallops is typically allowed from July 1st through September 20th (check the FWC website for details). Sunset offers a BYOF (Bring Your Own Fish) option as long as your catch is ready to cook. By law, we are not allowed to clean your seafood and have a special process for handling it while in the kitchen.

All of us enjoy serving you and creating great food for you to experience. We are dedicated to providing the freshest ingredients possible for our menu items. All of our soups, sauces, dressings are made in house, as well as most of our desserts.
